Kevin Bales is the director of one of the largest anti-slavery organizations in the world: Free the Slaves.  This book is essential for anyone wanting to understand modern day slavery.  Bales has traveled and researched slavery extensively. The book includes personal stories, general synopsis, and a financial breakdown of the different slave industries, showing how slavery can persist as a lucrative enterprise in our modern economy.

Coalition of Immokalee Workers http://www.ciw-online.org/

The CIW was developed by a group of agricultural workers in Immokalee, Florida, to fight for worker’s rights.  The coalition has won a number of law suits and lobbied to get higher wages for workers.  They have also documented cases of slave labor which have been brought to court and resolved.  The CIW website has updated news stories and educational resources around workers’ rights and slavery.

Free the slaves is one of the largest organizations fighting slavery in the world today.  Founder and director Kevin Bales is considered a leading expert on slavery and has written a number of books on the subject.  Free the Slaves works worldwide to expose slavery and help free and rehabilitate slaves.

This book offers an excellent overview of the different kinds of slavery in existence today.  It offers a narrow definition of slavery in order to clearly determine where slavery is alive and active.  It gives a number of personal stories, as well as a country by country breakdown of the most common slave trades.  

 “Slavery and the Making of America,” a PBS publication:  http://www.pbs.org/wnet/slavery/memories/index_flash.html This publication offers a number of audio interviews with former slaves in the American south.  The interviews offer valuable insight into the lives and conditions of former slaves.  Using these audio interviews allows students to hear the emotion of those telling their own stories and connect with these individuals in a way they could not through simply reading about events.
